Lees-McRae's The Vagina Monologues

Lees-McRae College students, faculty, staff and alumni will present Eve Ensler’s play "The Vagina Monologues" at 7:00 p.m. in Evans Auditorium on the campus in Banner Elk.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $5 for students with an ID.

The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning play based on Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With both humor and grace, the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength.

Through this play and the liberation of the word it celebrates, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives, according to a Lees-McRae College press release. For more than 12 years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public, the release said.

Proceeds from the performance, presented by the Lees-McRae offices of Community Outreach and Campus Life, will benefit Avery Citizens Against Domestic Abuse. A free reception with refreshments will precede the play from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the King-Shivell Gallery in the Cannon Student Center.

The performance of The Vagina Monologues is open to the public and is intended for mature audiences only. For tickets or more information, contact Selena Hilemon at hilemons@lmc.edu or 828-898-3318.

“Shreddin the Love,” will take place at Beech Mountain Resort today (Saturday, February 20, 2010) and will be Boarding for Breast Cancer’s first event in the Southeast.

The day will be full of exciting activities that winter sports enthusiasts won’t want to miss. Slopestyle and Boardercross competitions will be taking place at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively; entry fees are simply a donation to the cause and participants can register in the Beech Tree Bar from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

A verbal auction will take place at 4:30 p.m. Those in attendance will be able to bid on great prizes like vacations, season passes, ski and snowboard gear, gift certificates, and more. Kids’ events, including face painting, inflatables, and kids’ ice skating discounts, will take place throughout the afternoon, and those who donate to this worthy cause will get to ice skate for free from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. At 9:15 p.m., the luminary lighting ceremony will begin, followed by great live entertainment by local musicians (Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band and Native Sway), and this exciting event will come to a close with a spectacular fireworks display.
